The Mid North Coast Branch of National Parks Association complete
bush regeneration work every Monday morning at Gogleys Lagoon and Trevors
Corner in Dunbogan, a short drive south of Port Macquarie.
This is a great opportunity for anyone wanting to contribute to the restoration
of this beautiful part of the NSW coast. No previous experience is required
as training will be given on the day, so come along and gain some new
skills while making new friends.
Work starts at 8 am and finishes at 11 am. You should bring morning tea,
plenty of drinking water, protective clothing, sturdy shoes, sunscreen,
insect repellent and a hat. The meeting place changes every week so contact
us in advance to book a place and ensure that you have the correct meeting
location. Contact Dave at daver@marine.org.au
Fish Survey @ Bondi - Sun 3rd
A
group of volunteer divers undertake bi-monthly fish surveys at North Bondi
as part of CoastKeepers @ Bondi. Participation is open to any diver who
has completed the HarbourKeepers and CoastKeepers Fish Survey course.
Through these regular dives a picture of the frequency, distribution and
seasonal variation of 50 key marine fish species at north Bondi will be
built.
Data collected from the Bondi Fish Surveys is forwarded to BioNet - the
NSW government's online biodiversity database, Project AWARE for inclusion
in a global fish survey initiative, Waverley Council and the Bondi Marine
Discovery Centre.
The CoastKeepers @ Bondi Fish Survey "hub" is the first of
many CoastKeepers Fish Survey groups to be trained on the NSW coast. Click
here to register if you would like to get involved. If you belong to a
dive club or can organise a group of divers through a dive shop or other
organisation and you would like to set up a Fish Survey hub in your area
please contact Dave at daver@marine.org.au
Please check out our Fish Survey pages for more information on the surveys.

Grey Nurse Shark Presentation - Sydney
CBD - Tue 12th
The
Grey Nurse Shark population on the east coast of Australia is critically
endangered (IUCN Red List of Threatened Species) with fewer than 500 individuals
remaining. They are an inconic species whose loss would be a tragedy with
unforeseen consequences to NSW's marine ecosystems. The Department of
Primary Industries (DPI) will present an overview of past, current and
future research on the east coast population of Grey Nurse Sharks for
NPA members and volunteers.
The presentation will provide a general overview of the
biology, reproduction and population status of the grey nurse shark. It
will focus on areas where past research has been conducted including distribution,
abundance & population size. It will examine migratory movements,
threats, population trajectories and genetics. It will also discuss the
current SEACAMS, pop-up archival tagging program and artificial breeding
program.
The presentation will start at 18.30 in the Sydney CBD at
a location to be advised. Bookings are essential so reserve a place by
emailing Dave at info@coastkeepers.org.au
or call 02 9299 0000.

Fish Survey Training at Coffs Harbour - Fri 15th
- Sat 16th
Divers from the Solitary Islands Underwater Research Group (SURG) will
become the third CoastKeepers hub to be trained to conduct Fish Surveys
over this weekend. Divers will be trained in survey methodology, diver
safety and techniques for identifying the 50 target marine fish of the
survey. Once certified the SURG divers will be able to monitor the distribution,
frequency and seasonal variations of the survey fish in their area.
These surveys will provide a valuable set of baseline data
for marine managers. Ongoing surveys will alert marine managers to impacts
that are influencing fish populations. Data from the Solitary Islands
Marine Park Fish Surveys will additionally be sent to BioNet to help with
marine management at a state level. To learn more about Fish Surveys click
here. If you belong to a dive club
in NSW and would like to find out how to get involved contact Dave at
daver@marine.org.au
