The fish

There
is a huge variety of marine fish species in NSW. Large numbers of temperate
species mix with many tropical and cold-water fish that migrate from Queensland
and Victorian waters. Currently little is known about NSW marine life
and HarbourKeepers and CoastKeepers aim to change this.
HarbourKeepers and CoastKeepers Fish Surveys have identified 50 marine fish species to monitor. These have been carefully selected with input from various marine scientists and other marine experts. These fish species have been selected because they are easy to identify, are threatened and/or are good indicators of ecological integrity.
HarbourKeepers
will monitor these 50 fish species within Sydney Harbour whilst CoastKeepers
will monitor the same species along the whole NSW coast. Both surveys
are identical and feed information to the same statewide public online
database. They vary only in the geographical location they target.
See our Fish Gallery for more information about our selected marine fish species.
